a film about an event that changed Slovakia forever. The news of the cold-blooded murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová in February 2018 shook (and not only) the whole of Slovakia. Why did they have to die? The complex and in many ways shocking background of the true story is revealed by the co-production documentary film entitled Kuciak: Vražda novinára, made by award-winning director Matt Sarnecki. The film also provides viewers with previously unpublished witness statements, evidence, exclusive information and materials to which the Slovak public has not had access before. On a cold February night in 2018, police entered a house in Veľká Mača, southwest Slovakia, and found a bloody crime scene. The body of Ján Kuciak, a 27-year-old investigative journalist,
lay face down by the front door. He had been shot twice in the chest. In the kitchen, his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová, had been shot once in the head. The young couple were just months away from their wedding, and circumstances suggested that their deaths were related to Ján Kuciak’s work. Soon, the largest protests since the fall of communism erupted in Slovakia. They resulted in the resignation of then-Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák, Prime Minister Robert Fico, and Police Chief Tibor Gašpar. An international investigation team was set up to investigate the case. The clues eventually lead to Marian Kočner, a Slovak businessman with connections to many politicians, whom Kuciak has covered in detail in his articles. One of the turning points in the film occurs when journalist and former collaborator of Ján Kuciak
Pavla Holcová obtains a secret investigation file on the case from an unnamed source. This also includes confiscated computers and encrypted communications of the alleged mastermind of the murder: Marian Kočner. The encrypted messages reveal that the country has been taken over by oligarchs, corrupt judges, police officers and the mafia. The time for reckoning is coming...
The Danish co-production documentary unravels the tentacles of the (not only) Slovak mafia from a valuable foreign perspective and with the necessary distance. The film Kuciak: Vražda novinára had its world premiere at the Canadian Hot Docs documentary film festival in Toronto and its European premiere at the Karlovy Vary film festival, where it received an extraordinary response from the audience. It will be released in Slovak cinemas symbolically on the 5th anniversary of the murder of Ján and Martina.
